Where can I start with SyFy’s Treasure Island Mini-Series/Movie-Event/Whaterver they want to call it? I guess I’ll start by saying I have always been a fan of the original book (by Robert Louis Stevenson), and the 1950 Disney Treasure Island movie. I even loved the 1986 Return to Treasure Island mini-series starring Brain Blessed as Long John Silver. So with SyFy’s recent record with their movies, I was very worried when the screener showed up on my doorstep. Although SyFy does usually do very well with their miniseries, which they have recently taken to calling Movie-Events, I was not that impressed with Neverland.
Let’s just say I was very impressed with Treasure Island. It looks like SyFy sparred not expense, the sets and costumes looked wonderful and Eddie Izzard was brilliant as Long John Silver. This was a very accurate telling of the original story.
The only thing I had issue with is very minor. There was this weird split second fast forward thing they would do when people were walking up the Admiral Benbow Inn. Like I said it is a very minor gripe. The rest of the movie is beautifully directed. I particularly liked the way they show Jim Hawkins remembering them sealing up his father’s coffin, with Jim looking at the table and seeing the ghostly images of the undertakers nailing the coffin shut.
Final Thoughts:
I do apologize for getting this out so late, I only received the screener a week before Treasure Island aired on May 5th, and it was a very busy week. This is one of the best versions of Treasure Island I have ever seen. Great Job SyFy, now please keep it up with the rest of your movies. If you can keep this kind of story and acting quality going, your movies would be top notch, and you could release them in theaters. I would easily give this movie 9 out of 10.

The Cabin In The Woods a movie co-written by Joss Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard is finally going to be released after a long delay due to financial issues.
It looks like your standard teenagers camping in a cabin in the woods horror movie, but then Whedon throws a little twist in the mix. Check out the trailer.

New rumors have surfaced today about the fabled Doctor Who Theatrical Movie. David Yates, the director that brought us the last 4 Harry Potter movies told Variety that he is about to start work developing a Doctor Who movie with Jane Tranter. Tranter is the head of L.A. based BBC Worldwide Productions, she was also the Controller of Drama Commissioning when the Doctor Who TV series was revived in 2005.
David Yates:
“We’re looking at writers now. We’re going to spend two to three years to get it right,” he said. “It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.”
Yates made it clear this his movie would not be related to the current TV series, but would be a completely new take on Doctor Who.
David Yates:
“Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch,” “We want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too,”
Before directing the final 4 Harry Potter movies Yates worked with Tranter on several BBC
TV series, including “The Way We Live Now” and “State Of Play”.
This all sounds good, but every few months we are treated to some rumor about a Doctor Who movie about to start development/production, and admittedly this is the most possible sounding of all those rumors. Twitter and the interwebs exploded with news of this new Doctor Who Movie, even BBC news reported the Variety article. With no official announcement from BBC or BBC Worldwide, nothing at all has been confirmed. Then reports started coming in from those in the know that I would certainly trust in this instance.

To put this in some context, no Doctor Who movie is in production. It’s just some discussions at the moment.

To those hearing Doctor Who movie rumours, it’s just the same rumours which have been going round for years. Nothing’s currently happening!

Off Twitter for a few hours and the Doctor Who world explodes. There’s always talk of a movie. Perhaps? Maybe one day. But not right now!
BBC America:
A Doctor Who feature film remains in development w/ BBC Worldwide Productions in LA. As of yet no script, cast or production crew in place.
So as far as anyone in the know is concerned nothing is happening at the moment, now Yates himself said that they were going to take 2 or 3 years to get going. Maybe he is in some sort of discussions to helm the project, but nothing has been confirmed at this point. Even if it was, which as far as I’m concerned could be great news if Doctor Who is given the proper treatment, it would still be several years before anything came of it.
I am all for a Doctor Who theatrical movie, and I think it should be in its own universe separate from the TV series, much like the 2 Peter Cushing Doctor Who movies in the sixties. It needs to stay distinctly British, no Americanizing it, don’t make the Doctor human or half-human, and definitely no Johnny Depp! Show it the respect it deserves.

The first trailer has surfaced for Snow White & the Huntsman. I hadn’t really given this movie much though, but after seeing the trailer, I think I’m going to have to go see it when it comes out next Summer.
Snow White & the Huntsman stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, and Bob Hoskins.
This is definitely a de-Disneyed version of the story, taking it back to the darker roots of the original fairy tale.

SyFy Films announced today that it has acquired the rights to the Science –Fiction superhero anthology Wild Cards edited by George R. R. Martin. The ongoing anthology of 22 books was first published in 1987 and is based on stories by a consortium of science-fiction writers. Melinda Snodgrass will pen the script for Wild Cards which is the first acquisition for Syfy Films since its launch in December 2010. The announcement was made today by Syfy Film’s Senior Vice President of Production, Gregory Noveck.
“Wild Cards presents a terrific franchise opportunity given the volume of material from this compelling fantasy series,” said Noveck. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to develop a film based on the anthology’s supernatural heroes, and to be working with such talented and visionary writers as George R.R. Martin and Melissa Snodgrass.”
Wild Cards is one of the most successful and longest running, science-fiction book series. Its characters were developed with the goal of creating a realistic take on people with super powers and how they affect their daily lives. The series was conceived as a shared universe in which different authors contributed new characters and storylines to the overall mythos.
Martin and Snodgrass will serve as executive producers. Along with Martin and Snodgrass, original contributors include popular contemporary science-fiction writers Roger Zelazny (“The Chronicles of Amber”) and Walter Jon Williams (“Hardwired”). More recently a new generation of noted science-fiction and fantasy authors have contributed characters and storylines to this ever-growing universe. They include Cherie Priest (“Boneshaker”), Paul Cornell (“Doctor Who”), David Anthony Durham (“Acacia”) and Carrie Vaughn (“The Kitty Norville” series). The books have been translated into several languages and have been adapted into comic books and role-playing games.
SyFy Films was launched as a joint venture with Universal Pictures, with the goal of producing original theatrical releases in the SciFi, Fantasy, and horror genres. Beginning in 2012, SyFy Films plans to release two pictures a year.
I wish SyFy Films good luck in their endeavors. I look forward to the Wild Cards movies. Hopefully, they put more money/effort into their theatrical movies than the SyFy Channel usually puts into their SyFy Channel Original Movies.

Chronicle is a movie that follows three superpowered teens around camcorder style. From the trailer they do exactly what you would expect teens with superpowers to do, basically just have some fun and play minor pranks. That is until one of them snaps and goes Dark Side. Looks like it could be interesting.
Chronicle is slated for a February release.
