Miwk Publishing have announced a new book that explores the history of the Audio Visuals – Adventures in Time & Space.  A fan produced series of Doctor Who audio adventures starring Nicholas (voice of the Daleks) Briggs as the Doctor, that ran between 1984 and 1991.

From Miwk site:

In 1984 a group of Doctor Who fans began a project which would continue for another decade and eventually lead to much greater things.

Audio Visuals: Audio Adventures in Time & Space were a non-profit, fan endeavour creating full-cast audio Doctor Who drama. 27 plays later the majority of the creative team would go on to be involved with Big Finish, an officially licensed range of Doctor Who audio dramas.

For many fans Audio Visuals  seem almost canon. Nicholas Briggs was our Doctor. We remember the Daleks’ destruction of Gallifrey before it even happened on TV. We supported our Doctor through drug addiction, companion-loss and the horror of Justyce.

This book is a guide to those days. .

With contributions from Nicholas Briggs, Gary Russell, Nigel Fairs, John Ainsworth, John Wadmore, Alistair Lock, Patricia Merrick, Richard Marson, Nigel Peever, Jim Mortimore, Andy Lane, Chris M Corney and no doubt many others between now and September, all wrapped up in a new cover by Tim Keable.

Celebrate Doctor Who fan creativity at its very best.

Justyce Served is written by Alun Harris and Mathew West.  It is slated to be released in September 2012.  Profits from the book will be donated to Amnesty International UK.  It is available for preorder from the Miwk site.

I for one loved the Audio Visual plays and am a huge fan of Big Finish. I’m looking forward to adding this to my Doctor Who collection.

Brigadier-Lethbridge-Stewart

It is with heavy hearts that I must inform you that actor Nicholas Courtney has passed away peacefully tonight at the age of 81.  Nicholas Courtney is best known to Doctor Who fans worldwide as Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart.

Born in Egypt, William Nicholas Stone Courtney spent his childhood and education in a variety of places – his father serving in the diplomatic service – before entering the Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art after completing his National Service in 1950. He then entered rep in 1952 – his first job being actor/ASM in Cromer! – before a move to London brought him to the world of television.

He first appeared in Doctor Who as Space Security Agent Bret Vyon in the epic “The Daleks’s Master Plan” opposite First Doctor William Hartnell.  He then returned to Doctor Who as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart in the Second Doctor story “The Web Of Fear” alongside Patrick Troughton.  He was then promoted a year later to the rank of Brigadier in “The Invasion” and was in charge of UNIT.  Nicholas Courtney then became a regular on Doctor Who when the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) was exiled to Earth.  He starred opposite the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) in the stories “Robot” and “Terror Of The Zygons”.  He would reprise the role of the Brigadier in the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) stories “Mawdryn Undead”, and “The Five Doctors”.  We would see the Brigadier return to Doctor Who again in the story “Battlefield” alongside the Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy.  Nicholas Courtney would get to work with the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) in the 30th anniversary special “Dimensions In Time”.  He would also get to work with Colin Baker again in the Big Finish Doctor Who audio play “The Spectre of Lanyon Moor”.  He would play opposite Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) in the Big Finish audio play “Minuet in Hell”.  This gives Nicholas Courtney the distinction of having played the Brigadier with all 8 of the Classic Series Doctors.

The Brigadier has been mentioned in the New Doctor Who series, but has never appeared.  The Brigadier has by this point been knighted.  Nicholas Courtney reprised his role as the Brigadier or Sir Alistair in the Sarah Jane Adventures in 2008 in the story “Enemy Of The Bane”.

In 1997 Nicholas Courtney became the Honorary President of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, a position he was very proud to hold.

There have been two autobiographies on his life, Five Rounds Rapid! in 1998 and Still Getting Away With It in 2005; his memoirs were also released by Big Finish as A Soldier In Time in 2002.

Nicholas Courtney

He will be missed greatly, and our condolences go out to his family and friends.

William Nicholas Stone Courtney (16th December 1929 – 22nd February 2011)

Sci-Fi and Fantasy Audio

On January 19, 2011, in General, by VaderFan

Are you a fan of original audio content?  I am.  I’m not referring to just music or generic talk shows here.  I’m talking about actual variety.  With the advent of podcasting, it almost seems at times that the golden age of radio has returned in an on-demand format.  My love of audio goes far beyond podcasting, however.  I can remember when I was a kid listening to the weekly episodes of The Empire Strikes Back on Sunday evenings.  Go figure there’s a Star Wars connection in my world.  Later on, I was introduced to old time radio shows such as The Adventures of Superman, The Lone Ranger, and The Green Hornet.  My favorite of that era?  The Shadow.

There’s something about audio that just seems more gratifying to me than anything in a video format.  As much as I adore the work of ILM, my imagination is still far more powerful.  Combine that with a day job that allows me to listen to audio books and full-cast audio dramas all day / every day, and it makes the job bearable and the day enjoyable.  I go to work armed with a fully-loaded 160 Gb iPod classic on one hip, my trusty Droid X filled with audio books and full-cast dramas on the other.  It’s probably the reason I’m so disillusioned with the current TV offerings.

It’s some of these high-quality full-cast dramas that I wanted to share here as I think these are best for people just discovering the world of audio.  No, I’m not getting paid (though I’d like to be!).  I just like to share quality with other fans.

First and foremost, the offerings at Big Finish Productions cannot be praised enough.  I discovered their work first with their Doctor Who audios; indeed, these were the very audios that made me a fan of the venerable TV series.  It’s because of these audios that I proclaim Paul McGann to be my Doctor, though it’s hard to choose sometimes because the contributions of Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy are easily just as amazing.  As much as I enjoy all of the TV incarnations of the Doctor, I still feel these audios are far better than anything we’ve seen on screen so far.  Just a side note, if you listen carefully, you can find David Tennant playing multiple and random roles.  Big Finish’s Doctor Who line has expanded to include The Companion Chronicles, Bernice Summerfield, several mini-series (I highly recommend the Dalek Empire series for people like myself who tend to laugh at those pepperpots – trust me, you’ll stop laughing), and even some alternate universe stories in the form of Doctor Who Unbound.  But the fun doesn’t stop there.  Big Finish has produced some other favorites including Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Highlander, 2000 A.D. (Judge Dredd), and Dark Shadows.  The only downside is that once you discover their back catalog of goodies, you’ll go broke really fast in an attempt to keep up.

Another company that produces audio crack is Graphic Audio.  These are the people that provide full-cast translations of comics and novels from DC Comics.  But the fun doesn’t stop there.  You can also find the translated works of Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks, and R.A. Salvatore, to name but a few.

Looking for a steady supply of classic audio books so you can finally burn through Dune, The Lord of the Rings, or the hundreds of Star Wars titles?  Audible.com is the leading source of audio entertainment on the net.  I found out about them via Jason and Jimmy from the Force Cast, the best Star Wars podcast on the net.  And they’re free!  That is, the Force Cast is free.  Audible, not so much, but they’re worth every penny.

And speaking of free, you’re probably looking for something that can stand toe-to-toe with these Goliaths in quality, but you need them on the cheap.  Look no further than The Leviathan Chronicles, easily the best podiobook on the web.  There are a couple of special edition episodes that fill the interim as we eagerly await season 2, but they’re only a couple of bucks each, which goes to fund more Leviathan.  Series creator Christoph Laputka describes Leviathan as old time radio, kicked up for the modern age, which is true for all of the suggestions I’ve tossed forth.  It’s efforts like this that continue to prove to me that the best content out there is accessible, affordable, and infinitely better than the regurgitated network fare.  It’s just sometimes difficult to know where to look for it.  I hope this helps.

If anyone else has thoughts about these or any other suggestions, please feel free to comment below.  I’m always on the lookout for more.

New Gallifrey Audio Series Announced!

On October 30, 2010, in Dr Who, by Carl

Straight off the Big Finish New Presses:

Five years after the last instalment of Gallifrey audio adventures, Big Finish Productions is pleased to announce that the series will be returning for a new four-part mini-series, picking up where the climactic events of series three left off.

Recording on the first two stories was completed in early September, and saw Lalla Ward and Louise Jameson reunited as the Doctor’s former travelling companions Romana and Leela. Also returning are Miles Richardson as Irving Braxiatel, Sean Carlsen as Co-ordinator Narvin and John Leeson as K-9.

‘It’s so great being back with the old Big Finish crowd for this mini-series,’ says producer Gary Russell, ‘and working again with some of my favourite people. Making the first three Gallifreys always was one of my most favourite experiences, so to do it again is fantastic. And it’s a real honour to come back refreshed and reinvigorated, and find out exactly what this particular group of characters is up to now.’

The series opens with Gallifrey Reborn by Gary Hopkins, which sees Gallifrey on the brink of an all-consuming war across the cosmos. Justin Richards then picks up the adventure in Gallifrey Disassembled, where Romana and her companions find themselves on the run from the High Council’s temporal assassins, with only an old friend able to protect them.

Next up is Gallifrey Annihilation by Scott Handcock and Gary Russell, where Romana and Leela find themselves plunged into an age-old war between the True Lords of Gallifrey and their Ancient Enemy. The series then concludes with Gallifrey Eternal by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter David Wise, which poses our heroes with an impossible sacrifice as their stories come to an unexpected conclusion.

‘What’s especially great about this series,’ continues Gary, ‘has been the way script editor Scott Handcock and I have worked with our writers to create a whole new platform to launch this series forward. If you loved Gallifrey before, then this will make you happy again. But if you’ve never heard the series, this one is a great jumping-on point. Everything you need to know is summed up at the start – this series is about moving our gang forwards, not backwards.’

Cast members for the series include Sarah Douglas, Brian Miller, Mary Tamm and Colin Baker, who makes a special guest appearance as the Doctor.

‘The Doctor’s back on Gallifrey,’ confirms Gary, ‘and Romana, K-9 and Leela couldn’t be happier to see him. It’s been a long time since they had any contact with the Doctor and he’s utterly delighted to see them. And, with episodes three and four still due to record, I’m hoping Colin won’t be the last voice from Doctor Who’s illustrious past that we bring to the series.”

Gallifrey IV is scheduled for release in March 2011, in a lavish five-disc box set.

If you like political intrigue, imagine that with most of the characters in the story having access to time travel and temporal weaponry.   Yeah thats Gallifrey, and I personally can’t wait to hear this.
