Action Comics #1 Sells for Record Breaking Amount

The first appearance of Superman broke the record for most expensive comic ever sold!

Comic Connect (www.comicconnect.com) sold the rarest of rare in the comic world this week; a graded 9.0 issue of Action Comics #1. The bidding started Nov. 11th for $1 with a reserve price of 900,000. Just last year, a copy of this issue was sold for 1.5 million which at that time broke the record. When this auction ended, the sales figure came out to 2.16 million for the coveted magazine that introduced the world to Superman.

“When we broke the record in 2010 by selling the Action Comics No. 1, graded at 8.5, for $1.5 million, I truly believed that this was a record that would stand for many years to come,” said Stephen Fishler, CEO of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Collectibles.

I’m very pleased to hear that there is still this much love for the Man of Steel. Okay, so maybe I can’t honestly say that. There are a lot of people who just buy these comics for the intent of merely having it vs. the love of the character. I’d like to choose to believe it went to a person who cares very much for the piece of history they have bought. After all the talk earlier this week about the Jack Kirby Museum, this sort of thing CAN be used as proof that there is a want out there by the community. However, I know it also CAN be looked at as some extremist fan that had to own something that the other fans hold in awe. Again, my hopes want me to think that this puts proof on the page that people love the medium enough.

There are an estimated 100 issues of Action #1 still believed to be in existence. Out of those 100, very few are in any good condition. This copy is a gem amongst the rocks. Even the most damaged of copies is still a prize to behold, and will still cost enough to make most casual fans pull back with second thoughts. Some items are just worth it, at least to me. This is one of those few items I’d treasure for a lifetime. To the readers out there, Christmas is coming up….
