Synopsis: Max (Jessica Alba) breaks out of a training camp for children created with recombinant DNA, where they are taught to be the perfect soldier/assassin, along with a group of other kids in 2009. The story picks up again several years later, as she searches for the other kids, each with a barcode on the back of their necks to ID them. She's all grown up now, and spends her days as a bike messenger in a society where much of the existing technology was destroyed by an electromagnetic pulse unleashed several years before by a group of terrorists. By night, to support her search for the others, she's a highly skilled cat burglar, using her genetic enhancement to steal artwork and fence it.
She and her roommate, Kendra, live in an abandoned building, pay off a local cop to keep their residence secret, and spend evenings in bars relaxing. That is, until she tries to steal from the wrong man, known on the pirate video circuit as Eyes Only, a wealthy man just trying to cause a little consumer awareness, and fight injustice. He cajoles her into helping him, offering his services to help her in her quest in exchange.

Review: With so many new sci-fi shows debuting on FOX this season, it's hard to pick which is going to be the latest in a long-standing run of successes for the network, but this one is definitely in the running. Jessica Alba, chosen by the producers for her stunning good looks that seem to echo nicely the mixed ethnocentric background of the main character, Max, does an outstanding job of playing the hard-as-nails, trust damned near no one heroine. Her co-stars play well off her strong female role, and already there is in the air a hint of possible romantic involvement with her erstwhile compatriot. We give this series a strong thumbs-up, not only for it's gritty post-apocalyptic storyline, but also for the way it portrays women with strength and quiet dignity, something that's often lacking in the usual female-sidekick routine.
