Pilot Review:

"Revelations" Reveals a Wicked Plotline

Given the rampant, ongoing popularity of apocalyptic, spiritually oriented movies ("Constantine") and books (most notably the Left Behind series by Tim Lahaye), it was only a matter of time before someone took on the daunting task of bringing the biblical Book of Revelations to the small screen.

NBC's 6-hour miniseries is set to debut on April 13, 2005, and brings to our attention a cast of characters steeped in personal loss, confusion and self-absorbed searching for truth.

Bill Pullman plays Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Richard Massey, a man who just recently lost his young daughter, only to track down her killer (Michael Massee as demented Satanist Isaiah Haden) and bring him to justice. Natasha McElhone portrays Sister Josepha Montifiore, a nun working for the mysterious Eklind Foundation, operating without Papal sanction in an effort to prove the battle between Good and Evil is at hand. Massey and Montifiore are thrown together through the auspices of a comatose girl named Olivia, who begins spouting Scripture in Latin, and draws a map leading the nun directly to Massey.

As the plot develops, we are drawn into a cycle of otherworldly intrigue, highlighted by tantalizing snipits of a sinister older man seeking the whereabouts of the comatose Olivia for purposes only he can illuminate.

In order to stave off an Armegeddon he barely believes in, Massey must abandon his grasp on the only stable aspect of his life, his scientific mind at first refusing to believe that there can be any logical link between himself and the nun. Montifiore tries to convince Massey that not only is he already involved, but that his involvement is his only hope to save the soul of his murdered daughter.

As the credits run at the end of the first episode, viewers may find themselves letting out a deep breath they do not recall having held, surprised to find that they cannot wait to see what happens next. The slow, unrelenting buildup of suspense, the convoluted battle to determine what happens to Olivia, will draw in viewers of both scientific and theological backgrounds, no doubt spurring debate for days to come about what happened, and what will happen, in episodes to come.

Overall, a great series launch, making viewers set aside their dearest preconceptions and perhaps even reach for their Bibles.
